2017 Dayi 1701 "Queen Phoenix" (Huanghou) Raw Puerh Cake
1701 Dayi "Queen Phoenix" Zodiac Commemorative Cake. Specially selected high-quality raw materials from the core area of Yiwu, having undergone years of natural aging and mellowing.
As the first "Master-grade" zodiac tea in Dayi's history, Queen Phoenix was refined by Shanghai World Expo emblem designer Shao Honggeng in collaboration with Menghai Tea Factory’s top blending craftsmanship. With a majestic royal style and extremely high value for both collection and drinking, it continues the flourishing legend of Dayi's zodiac teas.
Tasting Report:
Preparation: 120cc white porcelain gaiwan, 6g tea, bottled mineral water.
One rinse. The guabeixiang (cup-clinging aroma) is moderate, the leaf bottom aroma is pure, and the concentration is medium-high. The sample storage is excellent.
- Steep 1 (approx. 10s): The tea soup has a certain strength and intensity. Bitterness and astringency balance is good, sweetness is acceptable, and huigan (returning sweetness) is moderate. It shows a light miyun (honey rhyme) and plum rhyme; the lingering charm is not yet obvious.
- Steep 2 (approx. 10s): The thickness of the soup rises significantly with a solid feel. The power has come up, and the honey-sweet sensation is obvious. The lingering charm is now manifested.
- Steeps 3–4 (approx. 15s): The flavor of this steep is "correct." It has high intensity and the honey-sweetness keeps up. Although there is a certain astringency, the overall integration is very harmonious; this actually increases the positive expectations for the tea's future transformation.
- Steep 5 (approx. 20s): The intensity is maintained well. Astringency gradually becomes prominent, but it is wrapped in sweetness, so it is not discordant. The thickness of the soup quality drops slightly. The houyun (throat moisture/charm) finally appears; it's not too late and has a certain persistence.
- Steeps 6–7 (approx. 25s): The tea flavor weakens somewhat. Intensity and sweetness are maintained well. The honey rhyme did not develop further, which is a bit disappointing. No other major changes.
- Steep 8 (approx. 30s): Shows "water taste" (wateriness). Sweetness is maintained well. It can continue to be steeped further.
Comprehensive Review:
The tea soup presents high intensity, providing an impact on the mouth and taste buds. Regardless of how much Yiwu material or what grade was blended in, the flavor presented can change the perception that Yiwu tea is only "soft and sweet." The shuilu (water path/texture) fineness is standard and has some persistence. The transition of the honey rhyme in the middle and late stages is not ideal; if it were better Yiwu material with this aging period, the honey rhyme would have a better presentation. The endurance is still good.
Tea enthusiasts often hate on younger Dayi, but the criticism isn't really warranted here. This 1701 Queen Phoenix, at the current sluggish market’s affordable price, is still worth Dayi fans picking up.
