2003 Canghai "Gongming" Nannuo Mountain Ancient Tree Tea
Nannuo Mountain is one of the Six Great Tea Mountains of Yunnan, boasting a tea planting history of over 1,700 years. It is home to the oldest existing contiguous ancient tea garden in Xishuangbanna, covering ten thousand mu, earning it the reputation of the "First Village of Ancient Tea." A King Tea Tree, over 800 years old, still grows here, lush and green throughout the seasons, leading to the area also being praised as the "Hometown of the King Tea Tree." The unique geographical environment cultivates the specific character of Nannuo Mountain tea: "high aroma, light bitterness, and heavy sweetness."
Nannuo Mountain can be described as having the best drinkability among the famous mountains. It requires almost no special tasting skills to appreciate, making it an excellent choice for both new and experienced tea friends.
Tasting Notes & Aging
When Nannuo Mountain tea is new, it possesses a fresh wildflower honey aroma. The tea soup is sweet and clear, with the purity of mountain spring water. It enters the throat with a sweet moistness and almost no bitterness or astringency. A natural herbal fragrance rises from the throat, lingering in the breath.
Stored for over 10 years, the aroma becomes steadier. Scents of honey, Chenxiang (aged aroma), and aged wood appear alternately. The tea soup becomes full, thick, and moist. It is sweet from the first sip to the last. The Huigan (returning sweetness) and Shengjin (saliva secretion) are soft, moist, and enduring. The Huigan is particularly outstanding, lasting through the entire drinking session. In the later steeps, a rich Bingtang yun (rock sugar rhyme) emerges—the more you drink, the sweeter it gets.
Botanical Characteristics
Because ancient tea trees have a long age and developed root systems, they can absorb nutrients from deep within the soil, accumulating more tea polyphenols, amino acids, and soluble sugars. The polyphenols provide the foundation for the concentration, amino acids enhance the freshness, and soluble sugars combined with pectin substances increase the viscosity of the tea soup. These three elements work together to form a mellow and rich mouthfeel.
